Blackjack – also known as ‘twenty-one’ and ‘pontoon’ – is a game that nowadays is generally found in a casino with players trying their luck on acquiring the elusive ‘twenty-one’. It is commonly presumed that the game started in France around the 17th century. However, as with most other betting games the exact development of the game is a mystery.
Twenty-one was introduced to the States after the French Revolution, but the game didn’t become popular in the betting houses until the casino provided payouts as a bonus. This was the only way that seemed to get people gambling on pontoon. One variant on the reward payment was for a gambler to acquire ‘twenty-one’ with the black jack card (worth ten points) and an ace (worth 11 points). With the increasing popularity of the game the bonus pay outs were canceled but the name of the game ‘chemin de fer’ lasted.
Twenty-one is not simply about achieving an outright ‘twenty one’, but the primary challenge is to defeat the dealer without busting. The casino clearly has an edge over the chemin de fer players over the long run, but with blackjack the player holds on to a bit of choice.
Since nineteen thirty one when America first approved wagering, black jack has developed into a traditional casino game. Furthermore, it is the blending of both skill and math employed in twenty-one that has made the game massively popular. Pontoon affords an alluring proposition to any scientist, mathematician or betting player looking to analyze the scheme of the game.
